Understanding Women’s Unique Needs in Recovery

Women and men experience addiction differently, and they also have different treatment needs.

According to psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) Valerie Puffenberger, “The biggest difference is that women tend to experience more interpersonal damage from their addiction. The impact on family relationships and children can be greater for women due to societal expectations on them as mothers and partners. Women also face higher social stigma and shame around addiction.”

Below, we’ll explore some of the most significant factors when it comes to treating addiction in women.

Severity of Addiction

In general, women are smaller physically than men, and their bodies also process many chemicals differently. As a result, women tend to develop addictions faster than men, and those addictions tend to be more severe.

Women are less likely than men to engage in substance misuse, especially excessive substance misuse, although this is changing over time.

However, women are considerably more likely to seek professional help and attend treatment than men. Women also tend to have better treatment outcomes.

Co-Occurring Disorders

One unique challenge women face when it comes to addiction is that they experience significantly higher rates of co-occurring mental health conditions than men, in particular depression and anxiety.

Co-occurring mental health conditions pose an extra challenge in treatment because they need to be treated simultaneously to avoid relapse.

Addressing Trauma

Women are significantly more likely to be victims of domestic and intimate partner violence and sexual assault than men. Tragically, domestic violence and sexual abuse have a bidirectional relationship with addiction, meaning that trauma can cause and worsen addiction, and addiction can cause and worsen trauma.

Pregnancy and Motherhood

Where women and men experience the greatest difference in addiction is perhaps in relation to children and families. Many substances, especially alcohol, cause severe birth defects if the mother consumes them while pregnant.

In fact, many states put a unique legal burden on women when they use substances while pregnant. This makes treatment both urgent and necessary for many women.

Even after birth, women are expected to provide a greater amount of childcare than men. In fact, one of the primary reasons many women seek treatment is because of pregnancy- or parenting-related issues.

Legacy’s Holistic Approach to Treating Women in Rehab

Legacy Healing Center believes the only way to effectively treat women (and all patients) is through a holistic approach. Addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit—and to treat it, you must heal the mind, body, and spirit.

Healing the Mind

We heal the mind through evidence-based clinical therapy techniques. We help patients uncover the underlying causes of their addictions as well as potential stressors and triggers so that they can cope in a healthy manner.

We work with patients to change their thought patterns and behaviors so they can achieve and maintain lasting sobriety. Some of the clinical techniques used by Legacy Healing Center include:

  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Rapid resolution therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Trauma therapy
  • Neuro-linguistic programming
  • Brain pain and vibroacoustic therapy
  • 12-step facilitation
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

Healing the Body

Legacy Healing Center heals the body using proper medication management.

We can help you find sobriety through medically supervised detox programs that will keep you safe and comfortable while you go through withdrawal.

We can also help you identify and diagnose mental health conditions and help you find the right medication and dosage to treat them.

Healing the Spirit

Legacy Healing Center heals the spirit through the many treatment programs that our caring and nurturing staff provides.

For example, our group therapy and support group sessions help patients forge meaningful connections with like-minded individuals, often forming friendships that can last a lifetime. We also offer support programs for families of women in rehab to help rebuild connections and heal emotional wounds.

Additionally, our recreational programs help our patients rediscover the joy in life through new interests and hobbies.

Legacy’s Addiction Treatment Programs

Legacy offers several rehab programs designed to empower women while providing effective treatment.

It’s important to note that we do not currently offer women-only programs.

Inpatient and Residential Program

Legacy’s inpatient (also called residential) programs in Florida and California provide housing, luxury amenities, and around-the-clock care for patients just starting their journey to recovery.

Our residential program starts with a thorough assessment. Then, we build a customized treatment plan that may include medication-assisted detox to help manage withdrawal. Through counseling, we help patients address the underlying psychological reasons for addiction and build a relapse prevention strategy.

Each day in our inpatient program is structured to help build healthy new habits and routines focused on recovery through good nutrition, recreation, community support, and learning coping skills.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive and highly structured program designed to treat even those patients who have been resistant to treatment in the past.

This program requires patients to engage in treatment sessions six days and nights a week, with at least 25 hours in clinical treatment. Both day and evening programs support sobriety, and the community housing is in a beautiful residential setting.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Our intensive outpatient program is designed to help patients who have completed an inpatient program maintain their sobriety while reintegrating themselves into society.

Our intensive outpatient program helps patients when they feel most vulnerable to relapse while preparing them to deal with the challenges of the real world. It provides flexible scheduling and a minimum of nine hours a week of clinical treatment, in addition to community housing, individual and group therapy, 12-step programs, and more.

Outpatient Program

Our outpatient program is a non-residential program strongly recommended for those who have completed intensive outpatient programs.

Our outpatient program provides one hour a week of therapeutic care in addition to a number of other recovery programs. Our outpatient program helps clients transition from more intensive treatment programs back to normal life.

Family Program

Legacy Healing Center’s family provides education and training to family members so that they can support their loved one’s recovery in a positive way without becoming enablers. Family therapy sessions help heal relationships and prepare the addiction sufferer and their loved ones for the challenges those in recovery face.

Comprehensive Support After Rehab

Recovery doesn’t stop when patients leave the rehab facility, and neither does our support. In fact, recovery is a lifelong process that never stops.

One of the biggest challenges in recovery is finding support and community. That’s why Legacy Healing Center offers:

  • Continued therapeutic support
  • Year-round social outings with fellow alumni
  • Weekly meetings
  • Support groups
  • Guest speakers at our facilities
  • And more

We believe that recovery isn’t just about staying sober. It’s about creating the life you were meant to live.

Women’s Rehab FAQ

What is rehab for women?

Rehab for women is a term used to describe drug and alcohol treatment programs that cater to the unique needs of women suffering from addiction. Rehab for women programs may be limited to women only or open to all genders.

There are many forms of rehab for women. Some of the most common and effective include medically monitored detox for women, inpatient rehab for women, intensive outpatient rehab for women, outpatient rehab for women, and aftercare programs for women.

How does drug rehab for women work?

Rehab for women generally starts with medically supervised detox. During this time, medications are provided that help reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms.

It is typically advised that patients enter an inpatient rehab or partial hospitalization program after they attend detox. If inpatient rehab is not an option, or if the patient has already completed an inpatient program, intensive outpatient and/or outpatient programs are highly recommended. Both inpatient and outpatient programs help patients understand themselves and their addictions better and use therapy, training, support, and other methodologies to change thought patterns and behaviors.

Are there specialized programs for alcohol rehab for women?

Many facilities do offer specialized alcohol rehab programs for women. In fact, some facilities exclusively provide alcohol rehab programs for women.

However, the rehab community generally agrees that the rehab process is essentially the same for alcohol as it is for all other drugs. This is because although different drugs have very different effects on the body than alcohol, the effects of addiction are virtually identical no matter what substance or behavior is the focus of the addiction.

What kind of support is available for women in recovery?

A very wide range of support is available for women in recovery. This support comes from a wide range of sources as well, including federal, state, and local government programs, religious organizations, nonprofit organizations, support groups, and for-profit rehabs. Some of the most important kinds of support available to women in recovery include:

  • Gender-specific treatment programs
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Counseling and therapy
  • Support groups
  • Mental health services
  • Medical services
  • Childcare services
  • Parenting and family support
  • Housing assistance
  • Employment and financial support
  • Educational programs
  • Peer support and mentorship
  • Legal assistance
  • Transportation services
  • Holistic therapies

Does rehab for women require health insurance?

Whether rehab for women requires health insurance depends on the specific rehab program in question. While most rehab programs accept insurance, only a small minority require it.

For the most part, rehabs are willing to help anyone who can pay for their services, whether that payment comes from insurance, self-pay, scholarships, or another source. While insurance lowers the cost of treatment for many patients, there are some services it will not cover, meaning that some self-pay is almost always inevitable.

If you have questions about whether your insurance will cover rehab, and what it will cover, call 888-534-2295 today to speak with a treatment staff member at Legacy Healing Center.
