What Is There to Do in Orlando That Doesn’t Involve Alcohol or Drugs?
When you are in the throes of addiction, it’s often easy to forget that there are other aspects of life that you can take part in. Although you were once consumed with the next time you could go to the liquor store or purchase your drug of choice when you become sober, you suddenly find that you have the time to explore and discover other things that you enjoy.
Many people are unaware of the abundance of sober friendly attractions in the Orlando area. The reality is that there are countless places that you can visit when you are looking for something to do outside of rehab or meetings. The following businesses and outdoor locations are some of our favorite sober friendly spots around town.
Recovery-Friendly Things to Do in Orlando
Many people in recovery are focusing a lot of energy on building better relationships with their family and close friends. There are numerous venues in Orlando that provide patrons with a sober-friendly, family atmosphere.
Fun Spot America Fun Spot has a fantastic mix of roller coasters, funhouses, and splash pads. Whether you are visiting the park with young children or just looking for an exciting day out, Fun Spot America has something for everyone. The park is open from 10 AM to midnight most days, but be sure and check before you go, as there are times when the park is only open from 2 PM to midnight.
Orlando Float and Massage Have you ever considered trying flotation therapy? Float therapy is an experience of sensory deprivation, weightlessness, and total peace and quiet. You float in silence and darkness in a small private pool filled with saltwater. The average float therapy session lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. This form of therapy has been known to alleviate pain from headaches and reduce stress which makes it an ideal activity for someone that is recovering from addiction.
Bill Frederick Park Enjoying fresh air and outdoor physical activities are great for everyone, especially people in recovery. There are countless hiking trails around Orlando that you can visit on the days that you need a good workout or just a bit of fresh air and stress relief. Bill Frederick Park has a great variety of hiking trails. The park features 183 acres with different hiking trails interlaced throughout the property.
Airport Lakes Park This park is home to several short trails that can help beginner hikers get in shape for longer more strenuous courses. When you’re done with your adventure, you can take a moment to catch your breath near the pier or enjoy the disc golf course. You can also plan to visit this park with children and let them play on the playground.
Lake Fran Bike Trail Loop Biking and running are two more great ways to get outside in the fresh air and sunshine. For great biking and running trails, check out these flat, easy trails that are ideal for beginners or bikers that are just getting back into the sport. The loop is 2.8 miles and open year-round. If you have a dog, feel free to bring him or her with you as long as they stay on a leash.
Lake Underhill Park. This quaint lakefront park has a running and biking loop as well as a variety of exercise equipment. Stop during your workout to enjoy the water as well as the abundance of local birds in the area.
Dubsdread Golf Course Golfing with a sober companion can be a fun day-long activity that not only provides you with exercise but a great way to socialize. It’s important to plan ahead when you are thinking about going on a golf outing. The majority of golf courses in the Orlando area have the option to purchase alcoholic beverages. If you are just starting out in your recovery, it may be difficult to go to a golf course and not feel the urge to drink.
But just because you’re in recovery doesn’t mean you have to exclude yourself from taking part in golf. We recommend that you invite someone to go golfing with you who is aware of your struggles with addiction. He or she will be able to provide you with company that reinforces your sobriety goals.
