Alcohol and Drug Rehab Center in Coral Springs

Substance abuse is more common in Coral Springs, Broward County than might seem possible, at first. The people of this city of sunshine and good cheer, struggle with cocaine, heroin, marijuana, opioids, and alcohol, much as people do over the rest of Florida. The year 2016 saw more than 1,000 people lost to heroin use. About 180 of those deaths happened in Broward County, alone. Binge drinking and other forms of alcohol abuse have been on a downward trend for a while, but among Broward County residents, one in four people who are admitted to rehab have alcohol in their systems. There were 1,720 DUI arrests made in Broward County in 2016.

When people binge on alcohol or try any form of drug use, overdoses are a huge potential threat to their lives and their health. Overdoses aren’t planned – they happen because users can never be sure how much alcohol or how much of a drug to take without shutting down their respiratory systems.

If you have difficulty quitting binging on alcohol or drug use, it’s important that you understand that the trouble comes from changes to the brain, brought about by these substances. Addiction is a brain disorder. You can’t simply will yourself to quit, when drugs have rendered your brain unable to adequately grasp the dangers inherent in these habits. You need help in the form of medical detoxification and rehab. If you’ve never been to rehab, however, you might be doubtful about how exactly going to rehab could help. What follows is a description.

What does the average day look like while in rehab?

Rehab begins with an in-depth intake process. You meet with addiction specialists and go through thorough medical, psychiatric, psychological, and psychosocial assessments. They look at your history of substance abuse, and the occurrence of the habit among members of your family, and then draw up a personalized plan to help you get better.

Treatment begins with medical detox. As you taper off your use of drugs or alcohol, withdrawal symptoms tend to kick in. You may feel terrible cravings, weakness, gastrointestinal complications, anxiety, tremors, and agitation. The inpatient medical detox process, that lasts about ten days, allows you the medications that you need to fight these withdrawal symptoms until they subside. Once withdrawal runs its course, your body is cleansed, but you still remain addicted. Addiction is a brain disorder that you need to address with therapeutic care if you are to really break free and not return to drug or alcohol use.

The days, weeks, and months that follow medical detox put you through intensive therapy. Your day begins early each morning with a healthy organic breakfast, and a short workout session. Following your meal, you begin your therapeutic sessions. Individual therapy and group therapy are commonly used in nearly every form of rehab plan.

Group therapy

In group therapy, you receive therapeutic treatment from a trained therapist, along with a group of other fellow addiction survivors. Group therapy can be just as effective as individual therapy. It comes with the following benefits:

  • You learn about what addiction is, and how evidence-based recovery works.
  • You reach out to fellow patients in your group, and both extend and receive support and motivation.
  • You hear every member of the group talk about the issues that they’ve faced in recovery, and hear about how they confront those issues.
  • You learn different coping skills that help you confront everyday stressors without turning to drugs or alcohol for relief.
  • You learn about how to build routines and structure your day.
  • You gain optimism, a sense of self-belief, and self-worth from the group.
  • You develop friendly relationships with members of the group that extends beyond therapy.

You make use of therapeutic tools to call attention to and challenge poor decision-making skills and distorted beliefs.

One-on-one therapy

Individual, one-on-one counseling sessions in rehab work as problem-solving opportunities. People tend to open up more readily when it’s just a therapist that they need to speak to, rather than an entire group. One-on-one therapy can be useful as a way to talk about the experiences of group therapy, as well.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is the most widely used form of one-on-one therapy. It was originally developed to help people suffering from depression, but has been modified to help with addiction. CBT isn’t psychoanalysis. Instead, it helps you recognize and overcome cognitive distortions that contribute to your inability to face life without turning to the comfort of drugs or alcohol.

You may be introduced to various kinds of cognitive distortions that your mind struggles with. Seeing yourself as a complete failure if you don’t succeed completely — is one form of cognitive distortion. A predilection for negative thinking is another. For instance, when something positive happens to you, you may feel compelled to discount it, because you feel you didn’t earn it. A tendency to jump to negative conclusions without sufficient supporting evidence is another form of negative thinking.

Recognizing cognitive distortions is important if you are to see life as encouraging and rewarding, rather than dispiriting and difficult. When you view life in a more positive way, you’re less likely to need to turn to substance abuse to feel better. CBT can also include cognitive restructuring training to help you change your thought patterns, help you be more assertive in relationships, and help you relax your mind to avoid anxiety. CBT is a highly effective way of helping people overcome the forces that push them toward substance abuse.
