Medically Assisted Detox For Addiction

Medical detoxification, or detox, is an essential first step in recovery from drug and alcohol use disorders. Since types of drug withdrawals and alcohol withdrawals can be dangerous and even life-threatening, medically assisted detox is often required. Drug detox programs are designed for individuals who have developed a dependence on and addiction to drugs or alcohol, to the point where they don’t feel normal when they’re not using or drinking. Below is more on medical detox, how it works, and how it helps people recover from addiction.

Our medical detox is tailored to your specific needs, which are determined based on an evaluation when you arrive at our center. Medical detox and clinical supervision are essential when considering beating your addiction. Legacy Healing Detox has the staff in place to help you find long-term recovery.

What is Medical Detox?

While the term “detox” is often used in conversations about food and ridding the body of certain toxins, medical drug detox is slightly different. Medically assisted detox refers to ridding the body of toxic, addictive substances under the supervision of a medical team. This team usually is led by a physician and consists of nurses, clinical staff, and therapists.

Like diabetes, asthma, or arthritis, addiction is a chronic condition that flares up occasionally, especially when the individual is exposed to certain triggers. However, like these conditions, addiction and sobriety can be managed.

Medically assisted detox plays a similar role in treating substance abuse that a hospital emergency department plays in the management of long-term medical conditions. Similar to an ER visit for a severe asthma attack, medical detox provides stabilization for an acute “flare-up,” but alone does not entirely treat the condition.

For most people who seek inpatient or residential care, medically supervised detox is the priority and occurs at the beginning of treatment. Even for those interested in IOP or PHP, medical detox is usually required first.

What Happens During Detox?

When a person is ready to quit using drugs or alcohol, one of the first things they’ll do is undergo medically monitored detox. During detox, clients are placed on a tapering schedule, in which medical staff may either reduce doses of the drug the person is addicted to or get rid of the drug entirely and administer detoxification medications, such as buprenorphine or suboxone.

In response to this reduction in drugs or alcohol, the individual may display a variety of symptoms called withdrawals. Common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive yawning
  • Fatigue
  • Hallucinations
  • Hunger
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Runny nose
  • Seizures
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Watery eyes

The severity and duration of these withdrawals vary depending on the type of substance the person is detoxing from and how long and heavily they had used said substances. A major benefit of medical detox is access to medical care to ease the discomfort and pain of withdrawals, which may otherwise lead the person to relapse. If you’re seeking drug or alcohol detox, our Legacy Healing Center locations can help.

Many Florida detox programs also offer treatment to help the individual overcome the addiction. If you’re wondering “How long is a detox program?” that is a question to ask when you contact Legacy Healing for detox help.
