Drug Rehab Centers in West Palm Beach

As with the rest of the country, Florida has been hit hard by drug abuse in recent years. Florida is also one of the states that were hit hardest by the opioid crisis, and rehabs such as our addiction treatment center in West Palm Beach, Florida, are on the front lines in the war against this epidemic.

At our addiction treatment center in West Palm Beach, Florida, we have specific treatment programs that are designed to treat addictions to opioid pain relievers, heroin, meth, cocaine, and ecstasy among others. Through these specialized treatment programs, you are able to gain the greatest benefit from the evidence-based therapies and holistic healing approach that we offer.

Some of the proven therapies that we have incorporated into our treatment plans include motivational enhancement therapy (MET), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (CBT). We also include the family in the healing process through our family therapy, which helps the family unit to work through problems that the drug abuse caused and strengthen the family bond.

An initial assessment of each patient helps to establish the specific needs that each person has. Through this assessment, the caseworker may deem a particular form of treatment to be preferred, however, as treatment progresses, continual assessments help to ensure that the patient is receiving the maximum benefit from therapy. The type of therapies that the patient is receiving may be adjusted as it is necessary.

In our initial medical assessment of each patient, we also explore the possibility of co-occurring mental disorders – a common condition in addiction cases. For example, if we discover that a patient has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) when they are admitted for an addiction to opioids, then a treatment plan is established that will address the PTSD alongside the addiction.

Alcohol abuse causes roughly 88,000 deaths each year in the U.S., according to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The aim of the treatment is to address any underlying issues that may have led or contributed to the formation of the addiction, and then equipping the individual with positive coping skills and helping them to heal physically and spiritually.

A recovery action plan (RAP) is established for each patient; the plan helps to address biopsychosocial needs the patient has and further helps them reintegrate back into society and create a new healthy way of life.

A wellness program also helps the patient to establish healthy eating habits again, improve their current state of health, and helps with pain management where needed. A sober coach is made available to each patient – one which will be available to the person in the years that follow.

How Does Drug Detox Work?

One of the elements of an addiction to drugs that can make it difficult to quit is the withdrawal symptoms. A drug addict will likely have experienced these withdrawal symptoms when they tried to stop before, and they can be overwhelming.

Withdrawal symptoms can trigger intense cravings and myriad of other uncomfortable symptoms that affect both the physical body and mental state of the addict. The cause of these symptoms lies in the effects that long-term use of a substance has on the body.

The body and brain chemistry of a naturally-working body strives for balance, but when a drug is constantly present, the body adjusts. In this keyed-up state that the body is in, it eventually becomes reliant on the drug to maintain this new balance. This is known as physical dependence.

When an addict attempts to stop using a drug, then their body and brain chemistry become unbalanced, and the withdrawal symptoms are the result of this imbalance.

For example, when a person becomes physically dependent on opioid pain relievers, their brain produces less serotonin and dopamine naturally – the feel-good chemicals that opioids release in the brain. It becomes so polarized that without opioid use, their brain is unable to produce these feel-good chemicals in sufficient amounts naturally – at least in the short term.

The purpose of a medical drug detox is to assist in managing the symptoms of withdrawal so that it isn’t as severe as it would be if the person attempted to stop cold turkey by themselves. In an opioid dependence, medications such as methadone may be used, which helps to relieve the symptoms of withdrawal from opioids. Clonidine may also be used to reduce cravings and other symptoms such as anxiety and muscle aches.

In general, withdrawal from drugs of all kinds tends to subside after around six days have elapsed. Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) helps during this time by administering medication where needed and providing around-the-clock care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the patient in our clinical setting.

Without the use of a detox program such as the one we offer at our addiction treatment center in West Palm Beach, Florida, it is often difficult for an addict to avoid relapse due to the intense nature of the withdrawal symptoms.

Of course, detox is just the first step in the recovery process, and it opens the door for behavioral therapies and other holistic treatment programs to be effective.

How Does Alcohol Detox Work?

A drug such as cocaine tends to produce withdrawal symptoms that mostly affect the mind and mood of a patient. However, alcohol is far more dangerous to detox from once a physical dependence has formed. In extreme cases, it may even cause life-threatening symptoms and stopping cold-turkey is not advised.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is believed to be caused by the interaction alcohol has with GABA receptor activity and consequently, glutamate neurotransmitters. When a person drinks alcohol, the calming effects that they feel is caused by the increased activity that alcohol has on GABA production. The neurotransmitter that usually helps to balance the calming effects of GABA is glutamate. In a normal function body, these two neurotransmitters, which the body relies on to send information across the nervous system, are balanced.

However, when a person is continuously drinking heavy amounts of alcohol, the body responds by producing high quantities of glutamate. While the person continues to drink heavy amounts of alcohol, the balance is maintained. But when alcohol use stops abruptly, the body is still in a state where it’s producing high quantities of glutamate.

When there is too much glutamate in the body, it induces a state of extreme stress and high levels of fear, anxiety, restlessness, and causes insomnia among other things. It is essentially the opposite effect of the relaxing qualities that alcohol normally produces through an increase in the neurotransmitter, GABA.

Withdrawal from alcohol may set in as quickly as six hours from the last drink the person had and may take up to 24 hours to manifest. Common symptoms include anxiety, depression, insomnia, tremors in the hands and limbs, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, headaches, profuse sweating, irritability, and hallucinations. The peak of these symptoms tends to occur between 24-48 hours from the last time the person had alcohol.

The most severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal are known as delirium tremens (DTs). They occur in rare cases but it can be difficult to predict whether they will manifest; they tend to occur in cases of severe addiction to alcohol. The symptoms of DTs include intense auditory and visual hallucinations, fever, severe confusion, restlessness, and seizures. If DTs were to occur outside of a clinical setting, they can prove to be fatal.

Whether or not DTs occur, the overall experience of AWS can be overwhelming. If detox is done alone, the symptoms of withdrawal often motivate the person to relapse just to stop the symptoms from continuing.

In the clinical setting of our addiction treatment center in West Palm Beach, Florida, patients gain access to important medication that can significantly lessen the effects of AWS.

Medications that are often administered during alcohol withdrawal include benzodiazepines among others. This medication helps to lessen the stress experienced in the nervous system due to too much glutamate in the system. It produces a calming effect and assists in managing insomnia, muscle spasms, and anxiety.

The ultimate goal of medical detox for alcoholism is to make the symptoms manageable, and more importantly, to help the person to recover safely. Additionally, once in the detox program, it won’t be possible to relapse due to the absence of alcohol, which gives the person a chance at real recovery.

How Long is Rehab?

At its core, recovery from addiction is essentially a process whereby a person adopts a new way of thinking, behaving, and responding to things in their life. Such a transformation doesn’t happen overnight.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in their Principals of Effective Treatment, the optimal time to actively take part in substance use disorder treatment is three months. If a person takes part in treatment for addiction for at least three months, they will gain the optimal effects of the therapy and treatment.

However, the three-month period doesn’t need to take place entirely in an inpatient setting where the person stays at the rehab center; it can be done through a combination of intensive inpatient treatment, such as a partial hospitalization program, an intensive outpatient program, and then a standard outpatient program.

After a 30-day program, a recovering addict may be ready to carry on through just a 12-step program – attending regular meetings and doing the steps.

In our whole-patient approach, we take a patient through all of the steps of recovery until they are ready to re-enter their life again. From the initial detox through to the intensive behavioral therapy and holistic treatment, and eventually to the aftercare services to help them maintain their drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle.

Does My Insurance Have Coverage for Rehab?

Addiction treatment services are recognized as a required part of health insurance plans in the United States. In most cases, your health insurance plan will cover certain treatment services that are deemed crucial by looking at your case and what you may qualify for.

Medicare also covers treatment for substance use disorder. Specifically, Part A of your Medicare package tends to provide cover for the care given in hospitals, or the detoxification period in a clinical setting. Part B of your Medicare gives you cover for the important outpatient services that include the behavioral therapy needed to properly treat substance use disorder.

How much you are covered for and how much you will have to pay out-of-pocket depends entirely on the exact health insurance plan you have.

In order to better understand your addiction treatment coverage, contact your health insurance provider and ask them about the specifics on how your coverage is decided, the types of treatment services you are covered for, such as outpatient programs and medical detox, and what your co-pays and additional costs may be.

If you require assistance finding out what to ask your insurance provider, then you can contact us at (954) 994-2965.
