What Is Trauma Incident Reduction?

Trauma Incident Reduction (TIR) is a type of psychotherapy that helps desensitize you to traumatic experiences that have painfully affected your life. This desensitization lessens or eliminates the negative impact of these disturbing life experiences.

When you go through some type of physical or emotional trauma, you will either tackle it head-on or block the event from your conscious mind. Trying to repress trauma will result in experiencing continued negative effects in your life until you’re able to completely examine the negative experiences you’ve endured.

If a trauma in your past has led to a substance use disorder, you may need treatment to help you overcome your addiction. Legacy Healing Centers is a drug and alcohol detox and addiction treatment center offering a wide range of trauma therapy, including TIR therapy to equip you to rebuild your life.

How Does Trauma Incident Reduction Work?

A trained counselor conducts approximately three one-on-one sessions in trauma incident reduction therapy, each lasting 60-90 minutes. The number of sessions necessary will depend on your individual needs as you delve into reviewing your past trauma in a safe environment, with no distractions or judgments. In this way, you enter a safe space where you can recall and engage with your past blocked experiences and examine the emotions and thinking patterns linked to them. Once you’ve confronted and faced your past trauma, the event is “over” and will stop affecting your present life.

What Can TIR Help Treat?

Trauma incident reduction can help treat anyone who has gone through a traumatic event, such as a car accident or shooting. It can also help those who have been involved in long-term trauma, such as domestic abuse or homelessness. TLR has been used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It may also be helpful with addiction if it is triggered by trauma.

TIR may also be useful in treating other mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. It helps teach the person how to develop a positive mindset by improving negative thoughts.

Candidates for TIR Therapy

Anyone who has gone through a traumatic event and not processed it may be a candidate for TIR therapy. They have blocked the event and may not even remember it. Others simply avoid thinking about the event or situation.

Many people who suffer from addiction also have undergone some type of trauma. Severe stress increases the risk of developing an addiction as the person attempts to find a way to cope with their stressful situation or trauma. Trauma reduction therapy makes them aware of the triggers that lead to misuse of a substance and teaches them how to move past the trauma.

Benefits of Trauma Incident Reduction in Addiction Treatment

Traumatic experiences are related to behavioral health issues, including substance use disorders. Addressing past trauma using TIR will help advance healing and recovery in addiction treatment.

Resolving past trauma can assist you in discovering which experiences or emotions are at the root of your addiction disorder. You’ll learn how drugs or alcohol have been keeping negative emotions and trauma buried. TIR unblocks your memories so you’re free to learn more effective coping tools and regain your self-reliance, emotional health and strengthen your ability to manage stress and deal with triggers.

When you process the trauma through TIR, you are able to move past it and develop positive ways of dealing with the emotions and memories instead of relying on drugs or alcohol. If you suffer from a dual diagnosis or a mental health condition and addiction, it can help you resolve some of the emotional issues, which can reduce the risk of relapse.
