One of the first and most important things to understand about drug and alcohol addiction treatment is that one cannot simply cure it; there are merely ways to manage the symptoms. The disease of addiction is one that will likely never truly go away, but it will become easier to manage over time, especially if a person receives high-quality, clinical care and actively partakes in aftercare programs after rehab.
So, how long does rehab last? The early stages of treatment are undoubtedly the most important because of the rapid, significant change that takes place. An addict’s behavioral, coping skills, interpersonal relationships, and health are some of the things that must be explored and worked on during treatment.
Based on the findings by the government body responsible for addiction treatment sciences, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the adequate time needed in order for rehab to have positive, long-lasting results is three months.
However, this does not necessarily mean that the entire three months needs to be completed in an inpatient rehab program, but rather as a combination of treatments that can be in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
For example, after an assessment at Legacy Healing Center, your healthcare professional might suggest that you spend time in the partial hospitalization program for a week to a month, followed by an intensive outpatient program for another month, and then finally our standard outpatient treatment program for the remainder of the three-month suggested treatment period.
The three-month period suggested by NIDA isn’t definite either. A person with a severe addiction and a history of relapse may find more benefit from a long-term rehab plan where they spend several months in an aftercare program such as a sober living home while attending an outpatient program and attending regular support group meetings. The correct period of treatment should ultimately be decided by the needs of each patient individually, and adjusted according to the results of therapy and holistic healing programs.
We have several treatment programs of varying lengths in order to provide help to each person and their individual needs. Generally, it is through our thorough assessment of our patient’s medical history, mental health, family dynamics, and severity of their substance abuse that our healthcare professionals can determine the best type of treatment and the advised treatment length that is required.
So, how long does rehab last at Legacy Healing Center? Our inpatient and outpatient treatment services for alcohol and drug addiction include 30-, 60-, and 90-day programs.
In each of these programs, we utilize the same types of treatment methods, such as a wellness program, meditation, and mindfulness, mentoring, career services, 12-step programs, and evidence-based behavioral therapies that are the most effective ways to treat addiction. Our whole-patient method of treating each individual can lead to positive change and the confidence needed to re-enter their life again without the need to abuse drugs or alcohol.
Generally speaking, the more severe an addiction is, especially to a highly-addictive substance, the more time is needed to effectively treat addiction. However, to effectively answer the question, “how long does rehab last?”, each person needs to be assessed to determine their treatment needs, and that remains the main factor in deciding which of our treatment program lengths will work best.
The 30-day program provides our clients with an intensive program where all of the best methods of treatment will be incorporated. An addict starting with their recovery in our 30-day program can expect to spend the first week in detox to ease their symptoms of withdrawal and to assist with their safe recovery. After detox, the various holistic and evidence-based treatment approaches will start. The benefit of this program is that it allows one to get all of the benefits from our treatments in a relatively short time, after which aftercare programs can help to maintain sobriety.
The 60-day programs that we offer have the added benefit of giving a person more time to benefit from our clinical treatments. With the extra time given to recover in intensive therapy, a person can be more prepared for the challenges they might face after they leave.
Finally, our 90-day program can be ideal for people with a severe addiction that fear they might relapse if they leave rehab too quickly. Spending three months in our rehab programs means that every step of an addict’s early recovery can be accompanied by our highly-skilled practitioners and it ultimately provides the best chances at long-term recovery.
As previously discussed, rehab is a way to kick-start recovery by providing a safe way to detox, alter behavior that doesn’t serve recovery, learning the skills needed to cope with addiction triggers, and creating a relapse prevention plan for the future.
However, maintenance of one’s recovery doesn’t stop after rehab ends. That’s one of the reasons why we provide our patients with a sober coach that will help them even after they leave rehab.
After rehab ends, aftercare services are the next step. Programs that are aimed at continuing care after rehab include our alumni support groups and community where recovering addicts can connect with other people in the community that are at various stages in their long-term recovery. Social outings are planned to help nurture the community of alumni, guest speakers are invited to functions for all to attend, and support group meetings occur on a regular basis.
We also provide access to family support groups and 12-step program fellowships, which can prove to be important for the challenges that recovering addicts face after rehab.
At any time, if a person in recovery feels the need to have further therapy or more intensive help, especially during trying times, then we can provide them with outpatient services to help strengthen their recovery.
