If you suspect that a friend or a loved one is struggling with an addiction to prescription medication or you think that you may be developing your addiction, there are several signs that you can be aware of. For example, if you notice that a person becomes very defensive when it comes to their prescription drug use or appear to be taking this drug more frequently than prescribed, this could indicate a bigger problem. Also, suppose it appears that the person in question is starting to become more anti-social and secretive, specifically regarding the topic of their prescription drug consumption. Why Rx Addiction Is on the Rise

The reason why prescription drug addiction is on the rise is twofold. In many cases, this type of addiction develops innocently. For example, a person may have insomnia and receive a prescription to help them sleep. However, suppose a doctor does not closely monitor the consumption and the length of time the patient has been taking a certain medication. In that case, this type of prescription drug use can easily spiral into a full-blown addiction. Once the addiction has taken hold, it’s not uncommon for a patient to try to go to different doctors just to fill their needs.

It’s important not to forget that prescription medication is also widely available through illegal street dealers. Depending on the drug of choice, a person could spend some money and achieve the prescription influence they believe they need.

The Most Abused Rx Medications

The most abused prescription medications fall into several different categories. Benzodiazepines are one example. These medications are mainly used to treat people who suffer from different mood disorders, including anxiety. Additionally, it may also be used to treat insomnia.

Common examples of benzodiazepines include Valium and Xanax.

Without question, however, one of the most abused prescription drugs are opioids. Opioids are widely prescribed to patients that are recovering from some kind of injury. Whether you recently went through surgery or were in an accident, your doctor may suggest that you use Oxycontin or Tramadol, which are heavily abused.

Dangers of Rx Addiction

Unsurprisingly, the greatest danger associated with Rx addiction is that it is very easy to overdose. When you are under the influence of prescription medication, it is fairly easy to lose track of the number of pills you have consumed. When this happens, there is an increased possibility that you may accidentally overdose. While it’s true that overdose can sometimes result in death, there are also other consequences of overdose, which include serious physical and psychological injuries.

It’s also possible that a person may suffer from long-term consequences of prescription drug addiction. Sadly, it’s not uncommon for a person to deal with failing internal organs or various other bodily issues that could impact being able to live a healthy and productive life.
