What is Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction is a dependency on a substance that makes it difficult to control the use even with harmful consequences. Consistent drug use causes changes to the brain that interferes with the ability to resist the urge to take more. The drug impacts the reward portion of the brain, causing feelings of euphoria and increasing dopamine, the pleasure center of the brain.

Early Signs of Drug Addiction & Abuse

Certain signs may indicate that a person suffers from drug addiction. For instance, they may feel that they need to use the drug on a regular basis to get the feelings of euphoria or a “high.” The person may require more of the drug to get the same pleasure as they did at first with a lesser amount. Obtaining or using the drug may become more important than other activities, including work and school obligations.

If you can notice the early signs of drug addiction, treatment is likely to be more successful with fewer instances of relapse. It’s helpful to know which drugs the person is taking, but the early warning signs for most drugs are similar. These signs may be behavioral, physical, or mental.

  • – Arriving to work or school late or missing days
  • – Reduced social life or spending more time alone
  • – Secretive behavior
  • – Telling lies
  • – Loss of interest in hobbies and normal activities
  • – Sleeping more or less than usual
  • – Lack of interest in personal hygiene
  • – Depression or mood swings
  • – Getting irritated or agitated for no apparent reason
  • – Difficulty concentrating

You may also notice that the person won’t stop using the drugs or alcohol even if it causes problems for them. They may try to hide their use or even lie or steal to get access to the drugs. It’s important to seek help right away if you notice these unusual behaviors.

Drug Addiction in Teens and Young Adults

Drug addiction continues to be prevalent among teens and young adults. According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, drug use went up by 61 percent for eighth-grade students from 2016 to 2020.

If you are looking for alcohol rehab for a loved one aged 18-25, consider a treatment program that understands the needs of young adults. Early substance use disorder can cause problems later in life.

Treatment for Drug Addiction

The first step to treatment for drug addiction is detoxification. This occurs when the substance leaves the system. Detoxing isn’t easy and many patients suffer from withdrawal symptoms because their bodies have become used to the presence of the drug. Detoxing at a drug addiction treatment center can help you be successful because there are medications and other treatments that can help you through the withdrawal process.

Safely Detoxing from Drugs

Unfortunately, removing the influence that drugs have on your body is not always easy. Regardless of the length of your addiction, your body will likely feel physical consequences once you stop consuming your drug of choice, which is known as withdrawal.

Going through withdrawal is never something that you should attempt to navigate by yourself, which is why we strongly recommend you take advantage of the drug detox program at Legacy Healing if you are still in active addiction.

Drug Withdrawal Timeline

The timeframe for drug withdrawal symptoms to manifest varies depending on your preferred drug. For example, suppose you are addicted to short-acting opioids such as prescription painkillers or heroin. In that case, you can expect that withdrawal symptoms will set in anywhere between 8 and 24 hours after your last use and can last anywhere between 4 and 10 days. However, the withdrawal symptoms associated with longer-acting opioids such as methadone usually manifest between 2 and 4 days and can linger as long as 10 days.

Benzodiazepines such as Valium or Klonopin are examples of drugs that carry with them an extended detox process. You can usually expect that you will begin to feel the drugs’ withdrawal effects anywhere between 1 to 4 days after the last time you used the drug. The severity of the withdrawal symptoms typically peaks during the first 14 days with the possibility of experiencing some form of withdrawal symptoms for months to come.

Once you’ve completed detox, the next step is therapy. The goal of therapy is to teach you how to avoid triggers and how to handle them if they occur. Individual and group therapy are often part of drug addiction treatment as you develop the skills needed for successful recovery.

Addiction Management

Addiction doesn’t go away with treatment. It’s a chronic disease that you will have to manage for many years. Addiction management requires ongoing support with aftercare programs. You can join support groups, attend 12-step meetings, and find a mentor. Legacy Healing Center provides aftercare support through numerous programs with alumni and professional staff.

Managing your addiction is also about learning how to live your life again without the use of drugs. Many programs include fun activities where you can stay sober and participate in sports events, group picnics, and other enjoyable activities.

Inpatient Drug Addiction Treatment

Although every program at Legacy is tailored to suit each client’s individual needs and goals, one of the options that you will have when you come to our facility is the chance to take part in our inpatient drug treatment program. In some cases, the prospect of enrolling in an inpatient program may sound scary because you are committing to stay on and live on our campus for a set number of days. However, the reality is that this program gives you the chance to remove any temptation to use your drug of choice during the time you are here.

Unfortunately, we have helped clients who do not always have the best support system when it comes to recovery. There may be people in their life that are co-dependent on a respective client’s addiction. For instance, if you are ready to get sober but you have a person in your life who continues to use drugs, interacting with that person during your first few days, weeks, and months of treatment could jeopardize your sobriety. When you come to Legacy, our team will provide you with the tools you need to maintain your newfound sobriety, so you are not so easily tempted once you return home.

From the moment you step through the doors at Legacy, you will be met with the happy faces of our team who are ready to help you work through every aspect of your addiction. When you enroll in our inpatient program, you will be provided with an environment that will give you the feeling of being at home while you’re away from home. You will sleep in a warm and comfortable bed every night and have the opportunity to participate in activities that will help you connect with fellow clients that may be struggling with the same issues as you.

How Long Does Drug Rehab Last at Legacy Healing Center?

The length of your program is dependent on a variety of different factors. First, it’s essential to consider your own flexibility. Are you in a position in your life where you have lost everything due to your addiction, and you are ready to commit yourself to the process entirely? Are you still in a position where you are leery about the premise of treatment, but you are willing to try it at least? The answers to these critical questions should govern your decision regarding the length of your program.

At Legacy, we offer three different options when it comes to the duration of your treatment. The first is a 30-day treatment plan. First and foremost, a 30-day program allows you to get sober without necessarily committing to a long-term program.

Keep in mind that although you will need to make the ultimate decision regarding your treatment plan, we recommend you make your final choice after first consulting with a member of our team to ensure you are making the most out of your time at Legacy. After all, that is what we specialize in here.

What To Expect From Drug Rehab Treatment

It’s no surprise that addiction is a particularly cunning disease. In many cases, clients tend to go through different cycles of active addiction to thinking as though they can handle their recovery by themselves to falling back into the habit again. Each time a person reverts into an active addiction mentality, the harder the recovery can become. It’s imperative that when you are ready to overcome your addiction once and for all, you reach out for the help you need from experts who understand addiction’s various dynamics.

The addiction expert’s primary role at our drug treatment center is to help you work through several factors. First and foremost, our team will help provide you with the tools you need to avoid consuming any prescription or illegal drug ever again. Remember, the only way to accomplish this goal is by committing yourself to the process.

Once you have settled on coming to Legacy for treatment, you can now focus on finalizing the details associated with your treatment plan, specifically whether you will participate in our residential or outpatient program.

Is the Drug Rehabilitation Program Medically Based?

Overcoming the physical and emotional effects of addiction is an intense process. In some instances, the withdrawal effects may be so physically and psychologically severe that there may be the possibility of harm, which is why Legacy Healing Center offers medically based programs. If you are a candidate for this type of program, you will work closely with our trained medical staff to navigate the different aspects of how you are feeling. We will put together a treatment plan for you that will help you cope with these feelings to begin to focus on your recovery and take advantage of the amenities and support features that Legacy Healing Center has to offer.

Before you begin any medically based program, we will take the opportunity to discuss your comfort level concerning any plan that we put in place. Many people are under the common misconception that a medically based program entails weaning you off one drug and placing you on another. The reality is that that could not be further from the truth.

Our medical-based program allows you to transition toward a sober lifestyle with as little physical or emotional discomfort as possible. During this transition, we can also coordinate with you to address the possibility of underlying mental health issues. Unfortunately, more times than not, mental health issues and addiction form together. In most cases, a mental health concern would need to be addressed using psychiatric medication. If you fall into this category, our medical team will work with you to put together a treatment plan that addresses both your addiction as well as any mental health concerns.

It’s essential to keep in mind that there is often a negative stigma associated with a mental health issue. At Legacy, we work to remove that stigma by providing you with an abundance of support in a variety of different ways. Although your program will focus on therapy and exploring the events that may have played a factor in your addiction, you will also have additional opportunities to indulge in our luxurious amenities.

Amenities at Legacy Healing Center

Legacy Healing Center was specifically designed to provide you with the best possible chance to achieve long-term sobriety. With this in mind, our facility features an abundance of amenities that will help you feel as though you are coming to a home away from home that is filled with friendly faces that are ready to help you.

If there is anything we can do to make your stay at Legacy more comfortable, we will always meet with you to discuss your options. Our intake specialist can also provide you with more insight regarding the details of our featured amenities when you first call in to set up the framework of a treatment plan. Our care and concern for each one of our clients are just one of the multiple reasons why a person struggling with addiction tends to choose to come to Legacy Healing Center over other options in the area.

Why Choose Legacy Healing Center for Drug Rehab?

The professionals at Legacy Healing Center worked tirelessly to design an environment where each client can feel comfortable and confident that they’re receiving the best care possible. Our holistic approach to treatment is one of the leading reasons why our clients come to Legacy. Our experienced team has developed an environment where every person who walks through the door will feel they are coming to a home away from home.

Our caring team provides you with the support and insight you need during your time at our facility, but we also developed a program that will help you remain in contact with the staff at Legacy and other alumni. Our Addiction Aftercare program was specifically designed for clients that have finished their initial treatment program and would like assistance transitioning back to a normal way of life. Enrolling in this program helps reduce the risk of relapse and keep you focused on your overall recovery.

The premise of the Addiction Aftercare program is to provide Legacy alumni with the option for continuing care. Whether you would like to continue participating in therapy or attending a 12-step meeting, we can supply you with the resources you need to continue down that path. Additionally, we host different events, specifically for alumni throughout the year, which is an excellent way to remain in touch with the staff at Legacy and other clients that completed their program. These fellow alumni can be a great source of support and assurance that you continue to take the right steps in your own journey.

What Types of Therapies & Treatment Programs are Offered?

It’s important to understand that for a treatment plan to be successful, you need to explore why you turned to your drug of choice in the first place. In many cases, you may have fallen into addiction without genuinely realizing the hold that was taking place. For example, many people were injured due to a car accident and were prescribed medication to help them combat pain. However, if their usage was not closely monitored, taking a narcotic could quickly turn into a full-blown addiction that would ultimately be sustained through obtaining a specific drug illegally.

In other cases, however, drug addiction is used to self-medicate as a result of some type of trauma. A first responder, a veteran or a person who was abused at any point in their life, are particularly susceptible to falling into the snares of drug addiction. When you are consciously or subconsciously unable to process the events you have been through, you may likely turn to other avenues to cope. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon that those ulterior methods involve something that could be harmful in different ways, such as addiction.

One of the primary forms of therapies that we offer takes place in a group setting. These types of sessions follow a similar model of a 12-step meeting. During these group meetings, a team member will guide the session that will revolve around discussion associated with different topics related to addiction and recovery. This form of therapy is beneficial for multiple reasons. First and foremost, group therapy helps you better understand the fact that you are not necessarily alone in how you think and feel when it comes to your addiction. You will have the opportunity to listen to the people’s insights and experiences around you and begin to develop connections with the people in your group. Additionally, you will have the chance to share your thoughts and feelings regarding a related topic.

One-on-one therapy, also commonly referred to as individual counseling, is another form of treatment that will play a focal role during your time at Legacy. Understandably, there are certain events in your life that you may not yet feel comfortable discussing in a group setting. Although the time may come when you feel at ease speaking about your experiences with other clients, it may be challenging to do so when you are in your program’s first few days or weeks. This time is why it is imperative that you actively participate in one-on-one therapy appointments. These sessions will revolve around giving you the time and flexibility to discuss events that may have triggered your addiction. Also, individual counseling is an excellent time for a team member to check in with you and see how you are doing as you work your way through your program. Our team can assist you in making any adjustments to your treatment plan during this time.

It’s also important to remember that addiction very rarely only impacts one person. If you have family members that love and care above you, they have undoubtedly felt the effects of your addiction. Whether things were said while you were under the influence or you started to distance yourself from your family due to your addiction, it’s expected that your relationship with your family will suffer. In cases like this, we always recommend you take advantage of our family therapy option. Utilizing this form of therapy can help your family begin to heal from the pain of addiction. It is also one of the leading reasons family members visit our clients during their time at Legacy.

Common FAQ's

Are Family Members Allowed to Visit During Rehab?

As addiction experts, our team understands the critical impact that your family can have on your overall recovery. Your family members are more than welcome to participate in our family therapy sessions, which we can work to schedule around your family members’ availability. We also realize that your family members may be worried about you while you are at Legacy. Provided that you sign a HIPAA authorization when you come to our facility, our team can provide a family member or a group of family members with a full overview of how you are progressing in your recovery.

However, you should always be conscious of the family members you decide to interact with during this critical transition. Sadly, there are many cases in which, knowingly or unknowingly, a family member is one of the triggers for addiction. For example, suppose you have a family member struggling with their own addiction or don’t understand that addiction is a disease. In that case, it may be better you keep your distance from that person until you feel secure in your sobriety.

Can I Have My Cell Phone During Rehab?

We recognize that individual clients need to remain in touch with family members or employees during their treatment. Although cell phones are permitted during your program, we ask that you do not use them during a therapy session or other activity. Every client requests this as a sign of respect toward the other clients.

For example, if a client is sharing something meaningful and heartfelt during a group therapy session and a cell phone goes off, they may feel that the topics being said were unimportant. In certain instances, feeling this way can harm the speaker and their recovery journey.

Can I Still Run My Business of Work During Rehab at Legacy?

We understand that every client does not have the flexibility to set aside their professional responsibilities when recovering from addiction. Many of the clients who come to Legacy run their own business or need to stick to a work schedule to make ends meet. If you fall into this category, you would be well-suited for one of our two outpatient treatment plans.

The first form of outpatient treatment we offer is our Intensive Outpatient Program, commonly referred to as IOP. Clients who opt to enroll in an IOP will come to Legacy for a minimum of nine hours per week. During that time, they will participate in all of the therapy forms that a client in our inpatient program would. You will have the opportunity to talk and share your experiences with fellow clients while you begin to recover and build up your system of support. New clients can opt to enroll in this program directly, or clients that have completed our inpatient program can decide to continue their treatment and use IOP as a step-down program.

We also offer a traditional outpatient program. Clients who enroll in this program will come to Legacy for at least one hour per week to take part in different forms of therapy and other recovery activities. If you opt to go through our outpatient program, we will always recommend taking the extra steps of participating in 12-step meetings as your schedule allows.

Regardless of whether you decide to enroll in our IOP or traditional outpatient program, our team will work with you to develop a recovery schedule that suits your needs. These two options are ideal for clients with outside responsibilities but recognize they need help to overcome their addiction. If you need to make any adjustments to your program, we provide you with the flexibility to do so, provided you continue to commit yourself to a healthy and sober way of living.

Are There Private Bathrooms & Rooms?

One of the transitions that many clients struggle with when they come to Legacy, specifically if they enroll in our inpatient program, is the lack of private bathrooms and bedrooms. We understand that your privacy is important to you; however, you must keep in mind that the only way to overcome your addiction is through continuous communication. Our shared bathrooms and bedrooms will provide you with the comfort you need when you do not participate in therapy or other activities. You can rest assured that you will have plenty of time throughout your day for time for yourself if you prefer to be alone for a short amount of time. You may come to find out that you will make a life-long sober friend with the person you meet playing ping-pong or the person who shares your room. Remaining open to these possibilities is an essential component of recovery.

Traveling to Our Drug Rehab Facility in Florida

It’s essential not to overlook the importance of adjusting to your life at home once you are done with your program at Legacy. During the past 30, 60, or 90 days, you will have worked diligently to remove the influence of harmful or toxic people, places, or activities from your life. Once you return to your own devices at home, it’s critical for your sobriety that you avoid falling back into those unhealthy habits. Remember, our Addiction Aftercare program can provide you with the additional support you need once you return home. Additionally, it would help if you always looked to find 12-step meetings that are local to your area to reinforce the lessons you learned while you were at Legacy.

When you are not at a meeting or partaking in other personal or professional responsibilities, a good rule of thumb is to take advantage of some of the different sober friendly attractions in your area. You may come to realize that there are several activities that you enjoy doing that you may not be aware of during the time you were in active addiction. For example, perhaps you want to go out for walks or runs in your local park. Maybe you have realized that you enjoy history, resulting in different trips to natural history or art museums.

Exploring these various venues is also an excellent way to reconnect with your loved ones. If you have children or there are kids in your family, you can set aside time to visit a children’s museum or have a picnic together. If you have a loved one who enjoys the movies, you can plan to see a film together. One of the best aspects about becoming sober is that an entirely new world opens up to you, which can include the healthy and supportive people you may have kept at arm’s length during your darker times.

Our intake specialists are available around the clock to help you to begin the process of enrolling in one of our treatment plans. They will walk you through the specifics of what you can expect during your time at Legacy and provide you with the peace of mind of knowing you are in excellent hands when it comes to your recovery journey. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us today at (888) 534-2295 to begin the process. We look forward to helping you through this new and exciting transition in your life.
